His responsibilities included planning contents, developing topics with authors, editing all copy, and supervising production. Under his leadership, the magazine for parents received over two dozen awards in national competition sponsored by the Evangelical Press Association.

After his undergraduate work at Calvin College, Gordon earned an M.A. and Ph.D. in English from Wayne State University. His dissertation focused on the short stories of Ring Lardner, a humorist who wrote during the early twentieth century. Gordon lives with his wife in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and enjoys cooking, taking photographs, and hunting for antiques.
